What makes Looe Key special?

About 50 different species of coral can be found at Looe Key. Some of these corals include: elkhorn, brain, star & fire corals as well as soft corals such as sea fans & sea whips.

Looe Key reef is unique because it is a representation of the entire Florida Keys reef ecosystem in one protected place. 5 different reef zones are found at Looe Key. These zones include: Patch Reef, Reef Flat, Fore Reef, Deep Reef and Deep Ridge.

The Fore Reef is the most developed area at Looe Key and this is the area that you will snorkel. The main portion of the Fore Reef is a “spur & groove” system. This system is made up of long ridges of coral masses that are bisected by sand channels. Almost all the fish encountered in the reef system can be found here in the Fore Reef. Angelfish, parrotfish, yellowtail, sergeant majors, moray eels, barracuda, blue tang, spiny lobster and sea turtles are a few of the amazing sights you can see here!
